RE: Please provide discussion questions and ideas for this roundtable

Here are some possible topics open for discussion:
• At CUWL’s suggestion UW Oshkosh will be dropping the $10 late fee for UB patrons. In the one-system, one-library spirit my question is: have you also dropped your late fee for your local patrons? We realize that if we keep the late fees for our local patrons, they will just UB everything since there aren’t late fees are
• Related local patron question: if you have, how do you get your local patrons to return local items if there is no overdue consequence?
• Related local patron question: at what dollar amount do you block library check outs (UW Oshkosh $10) and when do you apply a local patron university registration block? (UW Oshkosh $50)
• Do you have self checkout equipment and how does it work with Voyager?
• How do you successfully get your patrons to the basement while conducting that annual, infamous, state-mandated simulated Tornado warning drill (not an easy task no matter how much prep is done by the Circulation, right!)
• Are your group study rooms heavily used?
• What do you consider your best safety measures in place for staff, weekend staff, or student employees in the stacks?
• Reference is updating their name in some places to Information Commons… what might be some ideas for renaming the Circulation desk....
• Oshkosh’s circulation numbers dropping so we have been adding new services such as laptop and calculator checkouts, etc.
• Must patrons present their university card for service or do you allow leeway?
• What are some of your Circulation best practices,
• copyright issues in Reserves,
• circulating multi-piece items and getting back items with missing parts
• remodeling Circulation to look more modern (and cheap
decorating--this probably sounds trivial but we look extremely
dated and I could use some advice/new ideas),
• how do you promoting Circulation services...web news banner, blogs, etc.
• any comments on the Patriot Act

After the our meeting, Emily and I came up with a question that we thought we would pose to all the Circulation people out there...how do you handle DVD's at your libraries? At UWGB, we currently use Media Scheduling. If you do not book or schedule DVD's for your professors, do they just walk up and check them out? Do they ever call ahead and ask you to hold them for a later date? Have there ever been conflicts with DVD's being checked out by one person and needed by another? Any help / ideas / advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Do you find this valuable?

RE: DVD reservations

At UW Oshkosh we use a Microsoft Access database (not Media Scheduling) to handle video bookings. A Query is used to get a list of the videos that are needed in the next month. Those videos are put on 3 day reserve so that they are still available for use but for a limited time. Approximately a week before the patron needs the video, the video is removed from reserve and a hold is placed in the requesting patron's name. The patron then has 10 days to pick up the video. When we have multiple requests for an item for the same time period we request the item through Universal Borrowing for the second requester. (info from UWOshkosh Circ staff Mary Luebke)

At River Falls we have our DVDs in our online catalog and check out those materials through the Circulation Module. We use Media Scheduling for keeping track of our laptops and projectors. Do you find this valuable?
