1) Where do you provide reference service? (one main desk in library, multiple desks in library, location/desk outside of library, roaming [no desk] in or out of library, online library software [QuestionPoint, other chat?], online non-library software [Facebook, SecondLife, Yahoo Answers, etc])
2) Do you have other non-library staff at reference service points? (computing, writing center help, etc) 3) How many reference hours per week are covered by reference librarians? Paraprofessionals? Students? 4) Do students or paraprofessionals work the reference desk solo or only in collaboration with reference librarians? How many hours per week do they work solo? 5) What reference services have you discontinued in the last 10 years? (or five years, or whatever other time period...) 6) What new reference services have you introduced in the last 10 years? What hours are they staffed? And one other suggestion, although not a question for the survey -- it might be useful for us to look at the results of the 2004 and 2008 LibQual surveys across UW System to see satisfaction levels with reference services. I believe a good number of the UWs did LibQual in 2004 and are doing it again this spring... |

1) Should the label of "Reference Desk" be retooled? What do other academic libraries call their "Reference Desk."
2) How many total staff do you have? How many librarians? How many support staff? 3) What is the title and the responsibilities of the individual "in charge" of your Reference Department? Are they the "Head of Reference," "Reference Supervisor," or some other title? How do they delegate responsibilities? 4) How are scheduling conflicts handled for desk coverage? (Vacations, committee meetings, infolit sessions, etc.) 5) How long are desk shifts and how many shifts per week are assigned to staff members/support staff? 6) Who covers the desk? Do you use support staff? Do all librarians on staff provide coverage or only reference librarians? 7) What hours do you have the reference desk staffed? |

Would assessing the collections be worth while, i.e. how much of current collection is print vs. electronic? I think it would be interesting to see the percentages across the system.
