Justification
Traditional reference service faces challenges and change posed by:
  • the changing nature of how when and where library users do research
  • static or dwindling library budgets
  • significant turnover in the library profession
  • technological developments affecting access to, availability of and interaction with information sources
As a result, academic librarians must consider strategies for maximizing their resources while providing quality service to meet the changing expectations and needs of their users.

Charge
The New Reference Models Work Group is charged with providing an environmental scan of current models of reference service and staffing in the UW System and reporting on emerging trends and innovations in reference in System and beyond.


Key Expectations
Environmental scan of current models of reference service and staffing in the UW System, focusing on the following key areas of interest:
  • Use or decline of traditional reference desk and alternative methods of reference service
  • Roles of professionals, paraprofessionals, and students in providing reference services
  • Prioritizing methods of providing reference service

Report on emerging trends and innovations in reference in System and beyond
  • Review literature, focusing on empirical studies, to identify current practices in staffing and providing reference service in academic libraries


Timeline
Conduct survey and deliver progress reportto CUWL User Services Coordinating Committee by June 2008.
Report and recommendations will be delivered to CUWL User Services Coordinating Committee by August 2008

Role of Members
Members set the agenda, goals and action plans required to accomplish the charge of the Work Group.


Responsibilities of members
  • Accept and support the New Reference Models Work Group charge
  • Review all relevant materials prior to meetings
  • Attend meetings (primarily via conference call)
  • Work toward fulfilling Work Group objectives
  • Carry out individual assignments in a timely fashion



Role of Co-Chairs
The co-chairs are responsible for the general leadership of the New Reference Models Work Group and provide direction to members working in support of the charge.


Responsibilities of co-chairs
  • Accept and support the New Reference Models Work Group charge
  • Plan meetings and agenda in collaboration with the other co-chair and other appropriate group members
  • Attend meetings and stay abreast of work between meetings
  • Maintain records of the Work Group
  • Facilitate active participation and decision-making
  • Assume responsibility for the completion of the Work Group charge
  • Report back to USCC on progress of Work Group.
