CUWL Distance Library Services Standing Committee
Minutes, 1/12/2009
Present: Renee Sikma Wallin, Anne Kasuboski, Brad Gee, Aaron Nichols, Jana Reeg-Steidinger, Ella Cross, Kyle Naff, Leigh Dorsey
Call to order: 11:00 a.m.
Agenda:
Announcements:
Jana reported that instructors at UW-Stout are using the Echo 360 Lecture Capture System to record teaching sessions. She will be familiarizing herself with it as she prepares to do sessions for three graduate classes.
DE Map Draft:
Leigh noted that this is a work in progress and that she has created a separate page for multi-campus programs. Since there is a Distance Learning Wisconsin link on the Distance Learning Services wiki page, it was agreed that emphasis should be placed on the multi-campus programs page. Leigh also reminded everyone to set up “write” capability for the wiki. In the meantime we should send links to her. Ella will post information on a collaborative undergraduate business program that will be offered at UW-Superior. A page for online tutorials and brochures was also discussed, and Kyle offered to post links to brochures that he has created for off-campus users at UW-Whitewater.
ACRL Standards for Distance Learning Library Services:
The revised ACRL standards were approved in July 2008. Leigh referred to the “Needs and outcomes assessments” section and asked if anyone had conducted surveys of DE students. No one appeared to have done them; however, Kyle had surveyed instructors teaching online courses through UW-Whitewater. They reported that, for the most part, their students were not aware of DE-related services offered by the library. There was agreement that it is hard to do assessment when we cannot identify the DE population to begin with.
Jana suggested that we consider appointing a subcommittee to review UW System DE guidelines in light of the revised ACRL standards. Leigh and Kyle thought the guidelines could be addressed this summer—possibly at the CUWL summer conference.
CUWL Summer Conference:
Leigh will work with Kyle to organize a couple of demos and a breakout session for the CUWL Summer Conference, June 3-4, in the Pyle Center. Possible topics include:
- the Echo System at UW-Stout
- LibGuides and their use in DE
- using online videos for DE (YouTube, for example)
- Second Life (Deb Duncan at UW-Oshkosh could be a resource person.)
Next Meeting: Monday, March 16, 11am-noon [Note: This meeting has since been rescheduled for Monday, March 30, 11am-noon.]
