Charge:

1. Provide leadership in implementing usage of Library Dynamics by all UW Libraries. The Working Group needs to recommend the most expiditious and cost-effective ways to provide training for all libraries, focusing on the librarians involved in collection development.

2. Develop venchmarksbenchmarks for our shared collections identifying areas of overlap and duplication. The Working Group will articulate questions that Library Dynamics can help to answer in order to provide CUWL with a better understanding of our collections and to formulate recommendations for better coordination of consortial collection growth. This will help inform our primary vendor initiative.

Timeline:

Monograph holdings from all UW Libraries have been loaded and should be available by early March. Progress reports should be prepared semiannually for the duration of the license or as requested by the Collections and Resources Sharing Coordinating Committee.

Background:

The CUWL Taskforce on Collection Development outlined benefits for subscribing to a collection assessment in its May 4, 2005 report to CUWL:

  • Ability to identify areas and levels of duplication across UW libraries
  • Ability to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in individual collections as well as in consortia
  • Save considerable staff time for local weeding projects
  • Establish baseline duplication to show reduction as we proceed with collaborative purchasing
  • Target areas for potential remote storage facility
  • Jumpstart collaboration by seeing the 26 collections as one shared collection
  • Will provide information on existing collections to guide joint future decision making
