Meeting of Information Literacy Assessment Group, March 11, 2008 Conference Call
Present: Dave Dettman, Ella, Kathleen Mason (W-Barron County), Sarah McDaniel (UW-Madison), Cristine Prucha (UW-La Crosse), Ann Vogl (UW-Baraboo/Sauk county) Agenda:
- look to charge once more and make final revisions
- discuss workload issues.
- Discuss the UC System wide IL Assessment Consumer Reports proposal forwarded by Sarah, which Sarah was a part of when she was in California. She is going to California on Friday and will see how far they have gotten with their project. Proposal for finding out what assessment procedures are used by UC libraries, how to share results of survey, etc. Main page for HOPS (Heads of Public Service): http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/hops/infolit/
- Sarah had shared a short Chronicle article on ETS and its suggestions for improvement of accountability by colleges in response to pressure by the President and Congress to better demonstrate how student learning is improved. Perhaps something we could use as we look at IL. ETS has also published articles we will want to read.
- Everyone was satisfied with last draft of charge. Discussion of putting together a survey of other campuses as suggested by the USCC. Agreed that survey is a good idea. Dave volunteered to draft survey. We should email questions we think are appropriate to him and then he will put a draft together for us to react to. He can use campus survey software on Green Bay campus. Suggestions to ask targeted questions, focus on programmatic level, and what people might find most useful in terms of the research we will be doing on the tests.
- Question on what strategy we might want to use to investigate the tests. Sarah suggested we divide up the three assessment tests among us, according to what we had most experience, and were most familiar with on our own campuses. We are looking at iSkills, Project Sails and ILT. After discussion we divided up the investigations as follows:
Dave and Cris: iSkills
Kathi and Sarah: Project Sails
Ella and Ann: ILT
- Sarah: Need scope note, purpose. We have the charge, but when we put the report together we’ll need to think about our audience such as administrators and put together a programmatic statement in the intro. It was decided we could work on this later as we investigate the tests. Cris also volunteered to work on intro and conclusion as we get closer to that point.
- Sarah raised the question of what kind of product are we looking for. One page summary? No answer quite yet. Need Good description of test and what it measures, useful to see where it has been used before and where it appears in literature. Create brief bibliography on each test. Project Sails: question pool is in public domain. iSkills: demo on CUWL Wiki ILT: Ella and Ann will look into this. Cost of test is $7. We can contact them to find out what are options are.
- For next time: Come with a one pager including description and lit review. Forward Dave questions for survey. Ask if anyone is using the tools and ask if we can contact them. Correspond with each other via email Dave has set up. Dave will add materials to wiki.
