FREE RANGE LIBRARIANS Exciting stuff is happening: Facebook, wikis, learning commons, Info lit classes use Utube, gaming. i.e. Fantasy football—students look at nfl.com sites and discuss why one better than another; librarian and library resources at end of session. Discussion Categories: 1. Join forces with other academic support services to create new services. 2. Interaction with pre-existing units and networks 3. Re-defining what it means to be a librarian. Examples from Various Campuses Carroll College library, from WAAL presentation, contact: Linda Hartig, lhartig@cc.edu incorporated study skills center and computer center and are soon to also incorporate placement center. Library staff is cross trained to work in all areas. Jana Reeg-Steidingerreegj@uwstout.edu UW-Stout. Two reference librarians dressed in super librarian capes and masks. Appeared at beginning of the year orientations. Distributed Ask-A-Librarian Life-Savers. PlayedThat’s EZ library game at RA orientation. Rode bicycles at Frosh picnic. Stout’s D2L coordinators schedule informal visits to academic buildings and stop in at offices to visit faculty-very well received. Martha Stephenson Stephenm@uww.edu UW-Whitewater. Residence halls requested meeting with librarian. Spread outreach to high school to recruit students to UW-Whitewater. Kyle Naff Naffk@uww.edualso mentioned outreach to local business groups and Kiwanis Club focusing on "the value of libraries to businesses in general." Kyle scheduled to spend 5 hours/week in academic buildings; "literally walks the halls." Because he’s more visible to instructors, they more readily schedule library instruction. Terri Muraski. terri.muraski@uwsp.edu UW-Stevens Point. The Student Center’s Info Desk relocated to library’s Circulation Desk during remodeling; ultimately positive for the library. Student groups given space for bake sale. Collaborate with Public Library (UW-SP runs their catalog) LIFE workshops for retires; librarians do sessions on censorship and the Privacy Act. History Day: goes out to participating high schools for BI sessions and then host students’ research visits. Tom Reich treich@uwsp.edu organizes and hosts regional competition judging; works very closely with Point history faculty and a number of high schools to organize that day. Does +145 instruction sessions so students recognize. Daily lunches in different locations with laptop and students approach with library questions. While shooting 8ball in Student Union is asked alcohol content of rum. Feels uncomfortable at ref desk and does not receive questions. Goes out to medical classrooms (students’ environment) for library instruction. Students more readily come to the library later with their research. They wait til trust is established with librarian and then ask for help; technology consultations done. Dina Kaye kaye@uwp.edu UW-Parkside. Student body is 80% commuters. Asked: (1) how to get them to stay on campus; (2) how to deal with commuters’ unique needs. Response: Terri Muraski terri.muraski@uwsp.edu From Educause Conference: Oakland University in greater Detroit one example of a space that's working on a commuter campus. Multimedia lab, operated by the library offering high end equipment and collaborative space needed by commuting students to complete projects. Response: Jill Markgraf markgrjs@uwec.eduUW-Eau Claire. Library provides family-friendly study room with refrig and toys; greatly appreciated! Sarah Neises neises@uwosh.edu UW-Oshkosh. Goes to high school for orientation session; preferable to requiring high school students to come to UW library. Also collaborate with public library. Wikipedia is research tool of students: utilize; don’t ignore; they aren’t.
