Not-so-dangerous liaisons
Library liaison programs in the UW System

Listen to a recording of this session.
Questions for discussion:

  • What do library liaisons at your library do?
    • In what areas do librarians liaise? Instruction? Communication? Collection Development? Others?
    • Do you have liaisons to all academic departments? other non-academic and co-curricular departments?
    • Do you promote your liaison program to students?
    • Do liaisons embed in D2L courses?
    • Do liaisons embed (have "office hours") in academic buildings or elsewhere on campus?
  • What are some strategies librarians use to reach out to faculty/students in their liaison areas?

  • How do you manage expectations with your liaison program? Is it a problem?

  • Has the liaison model increased/decreased workload?

  • How do you assign/select liaison areas?
    • What about when there’s a change in staff/new hires?
  • How do librarians become familiar with a discipline in which they may not have background?

  • What do you see as advantages/disadvantages of a liaison model?
  • Has your library made a decision not to go to a liaison model? If so, what led to this decision?

UWW: Each reference & Instruction librarian has assigned academic departments. In most cases, the librarian also selects in those subjects areas and usually handles library instruction sessions requested for courses taught by that department. The academic departments also are allocated money from the Library’s acquisitions budget, so the librarian liaison watches to see if "their" departments are spending their allocations. Toward the end of the year, the liaison may use the leftover departmental allocations to purchase additional materials on behalf of the departments. At the start of each semester, librarian liaisons offer to meet with new hires in their departments to acquaint them with Library resources and services. Throughout the year the liaisons email the Library’s monthly online newsletter to faculty/staff in their departments and invite the department to make contact or make appointments if they have questions, etc. One librarian, liaison to the College of Business and Economics, has 4 office hours per week in the business building. Both that liaison and the liaison to the College of Education have been very active in preparing tutorials, etc. for some of their faculty. Librarians also prepare LibGuides for classes in their areas.
